Love is the greatest of all virtues. Both the path to faith and a result of it, magnified by the joy that springs to life out of Christian hope, love makes prudence prudent, temperance worth it, justice meaningful, and fortitude possible! “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Hope is the warranted expectation of good things to come. It’s essential to happiness in a sin-stricken world and flows out of saving faith. The hope of the reward strengthens the exercise of the Cardinal Virtues and enables courage in the face of death. The “Theological Virtues” are, faith, hope, and love. Faith is active, trusting, belief. It’s the foundation of all virtue (2 Peter 1:5). Justice, the virtue, is more than balancing the scales in court. It refers to all fair and truthful dealings. Fortitude is the will to endure and courage to do. C. S. Prudence is common sense, or the willingness to think something through before doing it. It’s basically wisdom. Those who lack prudence are impulsive to the point of foolishness. Temperance is self-restraint. It holds the virtuous back from excess. Today’s Bible Readings: Ezra 7:1-8:20; Psalm 30:1-12; Proverbs 20:28-30; 1 Corinthians 4:1-21
The Cardinal virtues are so called, because they’re essential to the functioning of society. Cardinal comes from Latin meaning “hinge of a door.” Prudence, Temperance, Justice and Fortitude are hinges upon which the door to civility turns. Look for them in those with whom you choose to work and play, and by all means pursue these virtues in your own life. Without them, no human interaction will be pleasant for very long. A virtue is a quality of the inner person, an aspect of righteous character. Originally the word for virtue used in the Bible brought to mind the qualities desired in the ideal Roman soldier, which, when combined with Christian beliefs, became the basis for the ideals of knightly chivalry. Every Christian is called to develop his or her inner quality, which is prerequisite to worthiness for any pursuit in life (2 Peter 1:8-9). Historically, believers have categorized the greatest virtues into two groups: Cardinal (recognized by all civilized peoples) and Theological (recognized by people of faith). How would you rate your love for your fellow Christians? Do you? Is it mere sentiment—mere words. 1John 3:18. Love is the highest test of Christian character. Are you making a worthy contribution to the work of the Lord? Financial giving is an important part of it, but it isn’t everything.
